The date of the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 23 rd March,1950 has been named World Meteorological Day. This organization announces a slogan for World Meteorological Day every year, and this day is celebrated in all member countries. The day also highlights the contribution that National Meteorological and Hydrological services make to the safety and well-being of society.
The theme of the WMD 2020
The theme of the World Meteorological Day this year is "Climate and Water Crisis". The main focus will be on climate change and water concerns around the globe. The slogan for WMD 2020 is "Count Every Drop, Every Drop Counts".
Why has been this theme chosen?
The world now faces increasing challenges posed by water crisis,floods, and droughts and lack of access to clean supplies. There is an urgent need to improve forecasting, monitoring and management of water supplies and to tackle the problem of "too much, too little or too polluted water". The theme will focus on frozen water, drought, floods and more.
Importance of the theme
According to the United Nations,around 844 million people desiderate pure drinking water. 800 children are dying due to diarrhea everyday which is caused mainly due to poor water sanitization.
